Not so much November 23, 2014
Reviewer: Bo from Iowa, United States
When it works, it's a pleasant experience worth a 4 star rating but after 2 units in 7 months my second unit is dropping "repeat recordings" or "all programs with this name" off the schedule after about 2 weeks.  Without manually updating the repeat recordings schedule it will not record them.  I have been troubleshooting with Tech support for about a 3 months now with daily monitoring, e-mails, phone calls, factor resets and etc. and I continue to have the same issues.

The price does not reflect reliability at this time and I would not recommend this product to anyone unless improvements are made.

Not really impressed November 20, 2014
Reviewer: John from Magnolia, TX United States
Have had (2) Units for 6 months now.  Not impressed.
Very poor remote layout.  Response of unit painfully slow.  Press a button on the remote (wait several seconds to see if it responds... or not).  Has option to record "all programs with that name" but after a week or so it stops recording them.  It is worthless to have to remember the "Season Passes" you want and go in there every week to make sure they are all still selected.  I have missed so many episodes of the weekly programs I watch because they drop off the recording schedule.
Expensive Box
Slow to respond to commands
Terrible remote
Weekly recordings fall off the schedule.
Just not impressed.

nice November 19, 2014

Got it up a couple of days ago and it works just fine.  Took the bulky TWC DVR to the store and cancelled my cable TV subscription.

I researched various OTA DVRs and chose this one.  It was the most expensive but with the free program guide, it seems the best value over time.

Paired with a Roku3 and subscriptions to Hulu+ and Netflix, I'll be saving hundreds a year while getting more entertainment and education than anyone could need.

The slim remote is nice and is much more responsive than the one from TWC.

The program guide is decent, not as good as TWC but useful enough.

I've only recorded a couple of shows but so far so good.

We'll see if the hardware holds up over the years but right now I'm happy with it.

Nice DVR, no monthly fees November 16, 2014
Reviewer: D from Columbia, MD United States
The tuner is not "cable ready". No problem, the Winegard leaf antenna works great. The DVR came up and worked right away.

It doesn't do a lot. It records one show at a time and lets you watch a different show while you are recording. That's fine with me.

It didn't take long to figure out how everything works. To record, go to the Grid and click on a show. Record just this one episode, or record all shows with the same name.

To watch shows, click "DVR", then "Play". Select the show you want to watch. If there is only one episode, it's on the main list. If there is more than one episode, there is a folder. Click the folder to see the available episodes.

The fast forward feature displays the time bar, making it easy to skip commercials.

This DVR is easy to use. Kudos to Channel Master for making this KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid).

Good, solid DVR November 14, 2014
Reviewer: John Ewan from Falcon Heights, MN United States
This unit is a huge improvement over the previous Channel Master DVR.   I've seen far fewer lock-ups so far.  And when it does lock up, the reboot procedure goes quickly.

After setting up hundreds of recordings so far, not one of them has been missed or skipped. And the "record all programs with this name" option is definitely nice!  Using an external hard drive is a big advantage in my book, since a failed drive can be replaced easily and pretty cheaply.

The only thing I downgrade this one is the remote control. The button placement isn't real intuitive or convenient. Also, the battery contacts leave something to be desired-- the remote often wasn't getting power. I seem to have fixed that issue now, by putting a piece of masking tape over the top of the button battery inside the battery compartment to hold the battery more firmly in place.

BUT, I still like this DVR quite a bit, and would definitely recommend it to any other "cable-cutters" out there.
